Background

The Seniors Teachers at Yarra Me School provide valuable educational experiences to vulnerable young people who are referred to their program short term from Primary Schools across the region. Home learning had the potential to have an even greater impact on the wellbeing and connectedness of these students.

Yarra Me School’s challenge was to help their students maintain social engagement and to continue to enhance social-emotional development through the remote learning program.

Results

“The Remote Control Program was magical, our students were thrilled to participate and the smiles on their faces spoke volumes.”

Even when face-to-face learning resumed, Remote Control helped to manage challenges due to restrictions with excursions and incursion. The Yarra Me team of teachers were thrilled to once more have the Remote Control program available to the class online. It provided a positive interaction from the Resilient Youth’s training team and a break from routine, but more importantly, it supported the development of many skills that will contribute to the students becoming more resilient and confident learners.

“Our students are learning about friendships and developing social skills. Scott and Sally had an immediately positive interaction with everyone and they were able to direct our students in games through video which, we have seen, can have many unexpected difficulties. The screen was not a barrier to the relationship building that our hosts, Sally and Scott, were able to provide.

Their expertise and skills proved to be invaluable in connecting to our class of students. One teacher commented on the impact that the activities had on two of our grade 6 students. They were able to restore their relationship by playing the games in Remote Control, by having fun together and appreciating the strengths they saw in each other.

The big question on the lips of our class is, when can we do this again?”
